Tijuana lies a mere ninety miles south of Los Angeles, just across the southern border with Mexico, and although the distance is relatively small, the cultural and economic disparities are enormous. For the past three years, contention over the southern border has ratcheted ever higher, often with dire consequences for those seeking refuge in America. Amidst the turmoil of the immigration debate at the southern US border, photographer Michael Rose and I decided to experience firsthand the situation in Tijuana, particularly among the large population of refugees awaiting asylum hearings there, and document what we found with photographs and audio recordings.
